The city's agricultural past, especially grapes, citrus and avocados, still shapes its identity. Grape Day Park downtown commemorates a harvest festival that dates to the early 1900s, and the surrounding hills are planted with vineyards and groves. Downtown's Grand Avenue is a walkable historic main street of antique shops, restaurants and bars, anchored nearby by the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Modern Escondido is a working, family-oriented city with a large Latino population and some of the more attainable single-family housing in inland North County; Redfin's August 2026 median sale price was about $792,000. It is also a destination.
