The 1912 Stevens building at 30th and University was the area's first commercial high-rise, and streetcars tied North Park to downtown from the 1910s until 1949. The North Park sign at that same intersection still marks the center of the neighborhood. The housing stock is largely early-20th-century Craftsman and California bungalows, many built by David Owen Dryden, whose work is protected in a 136-home historic district near Morley Field. The restored movie palace now operating as The Observatory North Park is one of San Diego's key concert halls.
