Golden Hill is one of San Diego's oldest residential neighborhoods, sitting on the slopes just east of downtown and south of Balboa Park, with Sherman Heights and Grant Hill below it to the south. Wealthy families built here in the 1880s for the views over the bay, and the neighborhood still holds many pre-1900 houses and apartments, including the 1887 Queen Anne Hayward-Patterson House at 22nd and Broadway. Streetcars reached the area in the early 20th century and helped fill in the blocks between the Victorians with bungalows and small apartment buildings. The neighborhood's history is layered. In 1947 Leon Williams, later a San Diego City Council member, became Golden Hill's first Black resident despite a racial covenant in his deed, and San Diego's first gay community center opened on B Street in the 1970s. By the late 20th century many grand houses had been cut into apartments, and a majority of residents today rent. Golden Hill's southeast corner of Balboa Park includes Golden Hill Park and the Balboa Park Golf Course, both with downtown skyline views. Its commercial life is concentrated along 25th Street and Broadway, where the Turf Supper Club, Pizzeria Luigi and Counterpoint sit near a nationally recognized butcher shop. The city plans Golden Hill and South Park together as the Greater Golden Hill community, and new apartment buildings along Broadway and 25th Street are adding density to the neighborhood's edges.
