Scripps Ranch is the eucalyptus-shaded suburb east of Interstate 15 and north of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, bordering Poway. Its name comes from newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps, who arrived in California in 1890, bought 400 acres with his half-sister Ellen Browning Scripps and built a home he called Miramar. He eventually assembled about 2,100 acres as a winter retreat and self-sufficient compound, and the tall eucalyptus trees along Pomerado Road and through the neighborhood are the most visible legacy of that era. Modern Scripps Ranch grew from the 1970s onward into one of San Diego's most sought-after family neighborhoods. ZIP 92131 has about 35,500 residents, a median household income above $185,000 and a median age near 44. Scripps Ranch High School and its feeder schools in San Diego Unified are a major draw, along with Lake Miramar, a city reservoir with a five-mile loop that is the community's everyday running track. The neighborhood's defining modern event came in October 2003, when the Cedar Fire swept into south Scripps Ranch and destroyed more than 300 homes. Rebuilt streets now sit beside decades-old ones, and fire preparedness remains part of civic life. The community's July 4th celebration, organized by the Scripps Ranch Old Pros, is one of the best-attended local Independence Day traditions in the city.
