Man killed in officer-involved shooting after hours-long Point Loma SWAT standoff
San Diego police say a man carrying a firearm was shot and killed outside a Nipoma Street home Tuesday night, ending an hours-long SWAT standoff that began as a welfare check.
A man was shot and killed by police late Tuesday outside a home on the 2700 block of Nipoma Street in Point Loma, ending an hours-long SWAT standoff, the San Diego Police Department said.
Officers were first sent to the address around 4:40 p.m. for a welfare check that was upgraded to a reported burglary in progress. The homeowner told police there were firearms inside and that no one had permission to be in the house, and the SWAT team responded.
A few gunshots were heard from inside during the standoff, police said. Around 9:20 p.m., a man holding a firearm came out the front door and was struck in an officer-involved shooting; he was pronounced dead at the scene about 20 minutes later. No officers were injured.
