Man killed in police shooting after nearly five-hour Point Loma standoff

San Diego police fatally shot a man outside a home on the 2700 block of Nipoma Street in Point Loma after a standoff that lasted nearly five hours, authorities said.

Officers were first called around 4:40 p.m. for a welfare check that was upgraded to a reported burglary in progress. The homeowner told police there were firearms inside and that no one had permission to be there, and the SWAT team responded. A few gunshots were heard from inside during the standoff.

Around 9:20 p.m., a man holding a gun came out the front door; officers opened fire and struck him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured. The man was not immediately identified, and — as with San Diego police shootings — the county Sheriff's Office is investigating.
