San Diego and the college district sign on to study a Civic Center overhaul
Mayor Todd Gloria and Community College District Chancellor Gregory Smith signed an MOU for a six-month study of converting the vacant Golden Hall into classrooms, a museum and performance space.
San Diego took another step toward redeveloping its aging Civic Center. Mayor Todd Gloria and San Diego Community College District Chancellor Gregory Smith signed a memorandum of understanding on May 11 for a six-month feasibility study of Golden Hall, the downtown venue empty since 2024.
The concept would turn the hall into an educational and cultural campus — a museum for Mesa College's World Art Collection, classrooms, performance and event space, and student and faculty housing. The Prebys Foundation and the Downtown San Diego Partnership are backing the study; any redevelopment would still need City Council approval.
