A ~500-pound bluefin, maybe a rod-and-reel record, comes ashore in San Diego

Angler Markus Medak brought in a bluefin tuna weighing 446 pounds gilled and gutted — an estimated 500 pounds whole — that a Point Loma fishmonger calls the largest ever caught on rod and reel.

Point Loma, San Diego

San Diego's sportfishing scene has a giant to talk about. Markus Medak, fishing aboard the Shearwater, landed a bluefin tuna that weighed 446 pounds gilled and gutted — an estimated 500 pounds whole.

The fish came ashore at Tommy Gomes's Tunaville Market in Point Loma, where Gomes called it the largest bluefin ever caught on a rod and reel. It won't count as an official record, but it was set for a live breakdown at Herb & Wood in Little Italy.
