A 446-pound bluefin — billed as a rod-and-reel first — lands in San Diego

San Diego's sportfishing scene has a giant to talk about: Markus Medak, of Shearwater Fishing, landed a 446-pound bluefin tuna — an estimated 500 pounds whole — that's being hailed as the largest ever caught on a rod and reel.

The fish came ashore at Tommy Gomes's Tunaville Market in Point Loma, which supplies local restaurants. Whether it will stand as an official record is disputed, but it caps a remarkable stretch — anglers have landed several 400-pound-plus bluefin off Southern California in recent weeks.
